INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The Indiana Blood Center is in urgent need of blood donations.
The center issued a "critical statewide appeal" for donations, saying it has less than a two-day supply of all blood types available. O-positive and O-negative blood levels are critically low, but donations of all blood types are needed.
O-negative donors are called "universal blood donors," since the red blood cells can be transfused to patients with any other blood type.
"Donating blood is a life-saving gift for which we can only rely on each other. We are counting on generous donors to answer the call for this critical need," the Indiana Blood Center wrote in a release.
The center said 550 Indiana blood donors must donate each day to meet the demand of the state's hospitals.
Donating blood takes about an hour and healthy donors over the age of 17 who meet eligibility requirements are able to donate.
