Get Fit: Try switching things up with interval training

There's a trap you'll want to avoid if you decide to start going to the gym.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The new year brings new resolutions for fitness for many Americans.

But there's a trap you'll want to avoid if you decide to start going to the gym.

There are a lot of opportunities to get a fresh start or start an exercise routine in the new year. When you go to the gym or get on your home exercise equipment, there is one mistake experts say we need to stop right now.

"I think the biggest mistake is they get into a routine and don't change it up," said Adam Haines with BGI Fitness. "The key to any losing weight and keeping it fresh is interval training. The 'Sprint 8' workout is one you can do at the gym or actually get for your home. It's a 20-minute workout and the key to it is high intensity for short bursts with rest and recovery in between."

To put high intensity into your new workout routine, if you go to a Matrix piece of equipment, look for the Sprint 8 program. You may have it at your gym. It has 30 seconds of high intensity, followed by 90 seconds of active rest.

If you don't have a Matrix, just look for the interval program on any piece of equipment. The key is to do this for about 20 minutes.

You can do it on the treadmill, you can do it on the elliptical and if you're just getting started, it's best that maybe you start on the bike, because it is lower impact.

Do the workout two or three times a week to help burn calories.
