WASHINGTON (AP/TEGNA) - As the White House looks for ways to restore normalcy in parts of the U.S., the government's foremost infection disease expert has a sober prognosis.

Dr. Anthony Fauci tells CNN that the country could experience more than 100,000 deaths and millions of infections from the coronavirus pandemic.

He says the pandemic is such a “moving target” that it's hard to pin down such a forecast.

Fauci was speaking to CNN’s “State of the Union” as the federal government is discussing rolling back guidelines on social distancing in areas that have not been hard-hit by the outbreak.

Fauci says he would only support the rollback in lesser-impacted areas if there is enhanced availability of testing in place to monitor those areas.

He acknowledged “it’s a little iffy there” right now.
