Avon parents get ready for first day of school Wednesday

The first day of school jitters are something completely different this year.

AVON, Ind. — On the playground, in the sunshine, it was easy to forget about the night before the first day of school jitters.

This year, with school starting during a global pandemic, those jitters aren’t like they used to be.

“It doesn’t feel like when I was a kid,” said Shane Hampton.

Wednesday, Hampton’s son will start first grade in Avon schools.

“I’m not nervous about him going back to school at all,” said Hampton. “It just kind of stinks they have to grow up in a world with this much to worry about."

Lisl Hewitt is not concerned either. She’s got three kids starting school this week in Avon.

“They’ve been very informative. We’ve had lots of communication,” Hewitt said of the district’s plans to keep students and staff safe.

When kids do show up to school, they’ll certainly notice some differences as part of the district’s safety plan. Among them, there’ll be plexiglass barriers at the front offices and seating charts in the cafeterias.

Tavia Irizarry’s two daughters won’t be among those students. She’s keeping her kids at home and doing E-learning.

“I worked in health care a long time, so I know how germs spread, and they spread really quick. I just don’t want to chance my children,” said Irizarry, who’s glad there’s an E-learning option, which she said doesn’t start for another week.

“We can send our kids at a later time, but I have...we have to have the cases down drastically before that happens for me,” said Irizarry.

Shane Hampton isn’t thinking that far ahead right now. He just wants to get through tomorrow.

“You just have to take it one day at a time,” said Hampton.
