GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. (WRCB) - A Tennessee couple stands accused of an unthinkable crime.
Police say John Cain and Deanna Grier tried to sell their five-month-old baby to a stranger on Craigslist. Undercover agents heard about the deal and jumped in, just in time.
The couple appeared in front of a judge for the first time Monday morning. They are accused of aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect or endangerment.
Undercover agents say they met the couple at a Dollar General in Greene County, about 75 miles east of Knoxville. According to police, Cain and Grier approached with the child, ready to make the deal.
"She went into the store and purchased some cigarettes and came back out and kind of hung out in the parking lot for a few minutes before we took them down," said Greene County Chief Deputy Ray Allen.
Cain and Grier are each being held on a $150,000 bond and are due back in court April 7 for a preliminary hearing.
The baby was taken into the custody of the Department of Children's Services.
