INDIANAPOLIS — The truck driver in a 2019 crash on I-465 that killed a mother and her twin 18-month-old daughters was sentenced Monday to nine years in prison.
The crash killed Alanna Koons and toddlers June and Ruby. Several other people were also injured when Pollard's semi crashed into six other vehicles on the north side.
In January, Pollard pleaded guilty but mentally ill to three counts of Reckless Homicide, Reckless Operation of a Vehicle in a Highway Work Zone, and seven counts of Reckless Driving.
Pollard will have access to mental health facilities as part of his sentence.
“The Koons family experienced a heart-wrenching tragedy with the loss of Alanna, June and Ruby,” said Prosecutor Ryan Mears. “As drivers on our roadways, we have the obligation to be vigilant and observe traffic and warning signs to keep motorists and roadworkers safe. Mr. Pollard’s failure to do so resulted in devastating consequences.”
According to witnesses, Pollard was speeding as he was coming into a construction zone and didn't brake as he hit Koons' stopped car.
