INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Police are investigating an incident where a man shot himself after a struggle with officers on the near south side.

It happened around 3 a.m. this morning at South White River Parkway West Drive and West Raymond Street.

Police say two people were sleeping inside a car when officers approached them and woke them up. When police asked the driver who he was, they say the driver would not tell them, leading the officers to become more suspicious.

Some sort of struggle ensued between the officers and the driver, who had a gun. Police believe the man shot himself, leading to critical injuries. Medics transported him to the hospital to undergo surgery.

So far, police say there is no evidence to suggest any officers ever fired shots. No officers were injured.
