State police: Brownstown officers acted in self-defense in fatal shooting

State police say two officers acted in self-defense when they shot and killed a man in Jackson County last month.

BROWNSTOWN, Ind. (WTHR) - State police say two officers acted in self-defense when they shot and killed a man in Jackson County last month.

Barry Rucker, 53, was fatally shot April 3 in Brownstown.

Investigators said Monday Brownstown Police Chief Tom Hanner and Asisstant Chief Joe Kelly tried to use a Taser on Rucker first. But when he fell to the ground, he pointed a gun at Hanner and wouldn't drop it. That's when officers fired.

An autopsy shows that Rucker died from multiple gunshot wounds. He also had methamphetamine and fentanyl in his system.
