Prosecutors say former Carmel swimming coach "presents a serious risk to the community"

Federal prosecutors want a now-former Carmel swim coach to stay in custody as he faces charges of child sexual exploitation and possession of child pornography.

CARMEL, Ind. (WTHR) - Federal prosecutors want a now-former Carmel swim coach to stay in custody as he faces charges of child sexual exploitation and possession of child pornography.

John Goelz is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student he coached and even recording one of their sexual encounters. The new motion argues Goelz "presents a serious risk to the community," saying he "groomed and sexually exploited one of his minor student athletes."

Beyond that, those court papers also claim that Goelz has an "admitted history of violence and rage," confessing to slapping his girlfriend twice and threatening to put her head through a wall.

Goelz was a full-time coach with the Carmel Swim Club and a volunteer assistant swim coach with Carmel High School, but he's no longer affiliated with either organization.

The U.S. Attorney says in light of the "Me Too" movement, Goelz should have been "more than well aware" of the consequences of his alleged actions.
