MEMPHIS, Ind. (WTHR) - State police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting at a truck stop in southern Indiana.

The shooting happened around noon Tuesday at the Love's Truck Stop in Memphis in Clark County. Preliminary investigation shows deputies from the Clark County Sheriff's Department were called to assist Charlestown police officers who were investigating a report of a missing man who was believed to be suicidal and carrying a handgun.

Deputies found 62-year-old Stephen E. Fischer of Charlestown at the truck stop. He was reportedly armed with a handgun near his vehicle. Police say Fischer fired the gun into the pavement in the truck stop's parking lot.

Attempts to use less-than-lethal force to detain Fischer were unsuccessful, police said, and at some point in the encounter, at least one officer fired at and struck Fischer.

Officers administered first aid to Fischer at the scene before he was transported to University of Louisville Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The state police investigation is ongoing. Detectives request anyone who has information or possibly video of the incident to contact Det. Matt Busick at 812-248-4375.
