LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WTHR) - A Lafayette mother was sentenced to 40 years in prison in a horrific case of child neglect that turned deadly.

Next week will mark two years since Makenzie Shultz's eight-month-old baby died of asphyxiation. The girl also hadn't been fed in days and was emaciated, dehydrated and malnourished. The baby weighed just 11 pounds when she died.

The child's father, Chad Giroux Jr., is already in prison, serving decades for his role in the crime.

Information that came out in court is making the tragedy even worse. The baby's family revealed the girl was kept in the closet and even had things piled on top of her.
