Indianapolis man sentenced to 12 years in dating app robberies

According to court documents, Demetrius Banks used the dating app Grindr to set up meetings with the victims and then robbed them at gunpoint.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to robbery.

According to court documents, Demetrius Banks used the dating app Grindr to set up meetings with the victims.

Once he arrived at the victims' homes or apartments, Banks would pull a gun and rob them. 

In many cases, he would take cash, TVs, laptops, phones and jewelry. In one of the robberies, a struggle over the gun led to two shots being fired, but fortunately, no one was hit. Banks also allegedly threatened to kill one of the victims. 

Police were able to identify Banks as the suspect in the robberies and arrested him. Banks then allegedly admitted to the robberies.
