INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Court records are shedding more light on how an IMPD officer fought back after being shot by a shoplifting suspect.
Documents say Ofc. Eric Rosenbaum had been beaten, his eyes gouged and had his shoulder dislocated during a scuffle with suspect William Allen. A witness called 911 after watching Allen leave the Lowe's store near E. 25th Street and Post Road last Sunday.
During the fight, Allen pinned Rosenbaum to the ground and started reaching for his gun. The officer tried to stop him, but Allen allegedly pulled the trigger while the gun was still in the holster, shooting Rosenbaum in the leg.
Rosenbaum was able to get his gun back and tried to shoot Allen in the head, but his gun malfunctioned and didn't fire.
Allen fled the scene, but was later caught by other officers. Rosenbaum called out that he'd been hit on his police radio. Officers found him and used tools from a trauma kit before rushing Rosnebaum to a hospital.
According to court documents, Rosenbaum told officers, after an eye gouge temporarily blinded him, Allen told him, "You're going to die today."
He was in court Friday facing several charges, including attempted murder. His trial has been set for July 8.
