LAWRENCE, Ind. (WTHR) - An armed robbery suspect is in the hospital after his would-be victim turned out to have a gun, too.

A man was sitting in his car outside a strip mall near 42nd and Franklin around 8 a.m. Thursday when he says the suspect forced his way into the car, showed a gun and demanded money. The victim told the man he didn't have any money.

The victim then saw an armored truck at a nearby ATM and started driving toward it. The suspect told him to stop, but it provided enough of a distraction that the victim was able to start fighting the suspect for his gun.

They eventually crashed into a fence, and both men got out - and the victim pulled out his own gun.

The men shot at each other and both were hit.

Lawrence police officers happened to be in the area and heard the gunfire. They arrived and took the suspect into custody.

The victim was hit in the shoulder. He was taken to the hospital, but is expected to recover.

The suspect was also hospitalized, but with more serious injuries. At last check, he was still being treated and listed in either serious or critical condition.
