Coroner Says SC Teen Died of Sickle-cell Crisis

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) -- A county coroner says a 14-year-old South Carolina high school football player died of complications from sickle-cell disease following practice last weekend.

The freshman football player at Lamar High School collapsed as he walked off the field following practice last Saturday. The team had just finished working out in helmets but no pads. He died hours later at a hospital. The National Weather Service reported the temperature in the area last Saturday afternoon reached a near-record of 101 degrees. Hardee says several factors are often involved in a sickle-cell crisis, and the exact cause isn't known.

Brantley's funeral was Friday afternoon at Lamar High./>
