New Palestine takes 5A state football title; Chatard wins 3A crown

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Three games were scheduled Friday in the IHSAA State Football Championships.

It was a battle of unbeatens in Class 5A, as Valparaiso faced New Palestine.

Each entered the game with identical 13-0 records, but New Pal prevailed, 27-20, giving the Dragons their third state championship title.

The Eskew Mental Attitude Award went to Valpo's Josh Fedorchak.

A two point conversion with time running out gave Lafayette Central Catholic (12-3) the win over Indianapolis Lutheran in the Class A final.

It was Lutheran's first loss of the season.

The Knights' Kyle Onken was presented the Ress Mental Attitude Award.

In the Class 3A final, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard won their 14th state championship by beating Heritage Hills, 34-3.

Cole Sigler from Heritage Hills won the Ress Mental Attitude Award

Both teams finished the season with 14-1 records.
