(NBC News) — There is a disturbing response to autism that is happening worldwide and NBC News is exposing it in an exclusive report.

It involves certain private Facebook groups for parents of children who have autism.

In some of those groups, members describe dangerous methods they've tried to "heal" their childrenn.

The groups, that can range into the tens of thousands, believe autism is caused by viruses, bacteria, fungal infections, parasites, heavy metal poisoning from vaccines, general inflammation, allergies, gluten and even the moon.

Among the most dangerous "cures" proposed is using chlorine dioxide, which the Food and Drug Administration warns is essentially industrial bleach.

In these groups, parents of children with autism say they give it to their kids orally, through enemas and in baths.

The "treatments" are toxic and can cause permanent damage.

Autism affects 1 in 59 children in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Doctors are unable to offer parents a cure, and increasingly, parents turn to social media for answers.

NBC News report spoke to two women working to fight and expose the dangerous treatments parents are attempting.

“It really weighs on you, but kids are being abused,” said Melissa Eaton, a single mother from Salisbury, North Carolina. “You see it. You have the choice of doing something about it or letting it go. And I’m not the kind of person who can see something like that and just forget about it.”
