MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (WTHR) - A Dyer man died early Sunday on Interstate 65 when he crashed his motorcycle into a pick-up truck.

Police say Michael Derby, 26, of Dyer was heading north on I-65 north of the Merrillville-US 30 exit when he struck a Ford F-150 pickup driven by Zachary Goldak, 20, of Crown Point.

A crash investigation determined Derby was driving above the 65 miles-per-hour speed limit in the right lane when he came up behind Goldak's pickup truck around 1 a.m. After hitting the truck, the bike hit the right guardrail and wound up 500 feet down the road on the left shoulder.

A Lake County deputy coroner pronounced Derby dead at the scene.

Goldak was not hurt.

Results of toxicology tests on both drivers are pending.

Traffic on northbound I-65 was diverted off at US 30 until approximately 5:30 a.m. for the crash investigation.
