Month of May is underway

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – It is officially the month of May and we are counting down to the Indianapolis 500. All the pre-race fun officially got started downtown on Wednesday.

Pacers' mascot, Boomer, did a slam dunk -- twice -- right over the top of an Indy 500 pace car with Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Doug Boles inside.

Plenty of people spent their lunch hour on Monument Circle, already looking forward to the next few weeks.

"I absolutely stayed up til midnight," said Boles. "I planned my nighttime shower so I could get out at five minutes til midnight and make sure I was tweeting out to everybody at midnight. This is my favorite month of the year and I want would not miss 12 o'clock midnight on the transition into May 1. We're really ready for May."

Something else to keep an eye on this month, a display of colorful wings, designed by local artist Mallory Hodgkin. She says the shape and style were all up to her and it's exciting to see them all around central Indiana.

"They're all over town," said Hodgkin. "They're huge. That's amazing."

There are nine wing designs at 12 different locations around central Indiana. You can take a picture with them and post them with #IndyWings on social media.
