Memorial Day Weekend Sales: What to consider, what to skip

Allison Gormly has what you need to know to get the best deals on summer sales.

INDIANAPOLIS — Memorial Day weekend is the kickoff to summer fun and summer sales.

Kristin McGrath with RetailMeNot said the reason for the deals is simple.

"Consumers have extra time to shop, retailers have an extra day to sell them things," McGrath said.

If you are in need of some things, now is a good time to buy home goods.

"That means deals on appliances, mattresses, furniture, all that big-ticket home stuff."

As for clothing, McGrath said the biggest discounts will be on winter and spring gear.

She added that when it comes to electronics, think twice.

"You're going to find better deals right around Amazon Prime Day in the summer and Black Friday."

When you are ready to buy, look for extra discounts.

Browser extensions, including Honey, search and punch in coupon codes for you.

There are also cashback sites, like RetailMeNot and Rakuten. Think of them as a supplement to your credit card rewards.

Just visit their site first, click the cash back offer you want, and it will redirect you to the store's site where you shop like normal.

If you buy something, the money goes to your account and a check or deposit is sent to you periodically.

But sale or not, make sure the purchase is something you need, because credit card interest rates are at a record high.

"Go into Memorial Day with a list of things you need or things that you've been meaning to buy or replace, you can pounce on those good deals and stay focused."

Google Shopping also provides pricing analytics and comparisons. If you set a price alert with them, they'll send you an email if there is a price drop.
