Kia and Hyundai tell owners to park recalled vehicles outside over fire concerns

While the cause is unknown, the carmakers believe the anti-lock brake system could malfunction and cause a short circuit, resulting in a fire.

INDIANAPOLIS — Kia and Hyundai are recalling 485,000 vehicles because their engines could catch fire.

So far, 11 fires have been reported, but no injuries.

While the cause is unknown, the carmakers believe the anti-lock brake system could malfunction and cause a short circuit, resulting in a fire.

Kia is recalling certain 2016-2018 K900 and 2014-2016 Sportage vehicles. Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2016-2018 Santa Fe, 2017-2018 Santa Fe Sport, 2019 Santa Fe XL, and 2014-2015 Tucson vehicles.

Dealers will replace the fuse for free, but until that happens, you should leave the vehicle outside.

Letters will go out notifying owners, or you can call your carmaker's customer service line. Vehicle owners can also look up their VIN on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration web site.

Even if your vehicle is not included in this recall, it is good to periodically check for issues.
