INDIANAPOLIS — Before you punch in your credit card information, consider this advice from the Better Business Bureau.

When it comes to crowdfunding, there's little you can do to verify the person collecting the money. So if you don't know them personally, your money could go anywhere.

As for solicitation, don't click on links to charities on unfamiliar websites, text messages or emails. Instead, go straight to the source.

Also, don't assume that social media recommendations are vetted.

If it's an organization, Ask how old it is and how will the donations be used?

Signs of a scam include a sense of urgency, unusual payment methods and a consequence if you don't act now.

The IRS and BBB both offer charity lookup tools.
