Queen of Free: Best budget spring breaks

Parents can actually find ways to keep kids active during spring break and save money in the process.

INDIANAPOLIS — Spring break in Indiana typically falls before weather is perfect for outdoor activity. Still, kids have those spring break dates "circled in red" on the calendar, said Queen of Free Cherie Lowe.

Unless you're fortunate enough to have your Disney vacation already planned or flights booked to warmer locations, February is prime time for hatching ideas for things to do when schools let out.

On 13Sunrise and in her weekly blog, Lowe shared her ideas for keeping the family activities less stressful and under budget.

Passion days

Everybody in the family has one or two things they love to do. Maybe everybody doesn't share that love, but they can go along and find some benefit from the experience for a day, or maybe just an afternoon. "Lean into your unique gifts and learn something from one another this year," Lowe said.

This might include going on a hike, shopping or attending a game as a family.

Don't go hungry

"Without a plan, it’s tough to find a place to dine that’s open, that we can afford, and that sounds good," Lowe said. And hungry people become grumpy people and sour the day for everybody. Lowe recommends heading off the problem by doing some internet research for affordable, unique local eateries and their hours of operation.

Packing snacks for long rides will also help keep stomachs full.

Give back together

"Find a place where you and your family can volunteer together for a day or afternoon as a part of spring break," said Lowe. It will likely be a fulfilling experience, and it won't cost anything.

Look local, or visit friends

Maybe you have friends who live near a destination or attraction that you haven't seen in awhile. If you can crash at their place, use what you'd have spent for a hotel to take your hosts out to dinner.

"It’s always smart to explore free fun during spring break," said Lowe, who points to libraries, community centers and visitors' bureaus for sources of local attractions that are worth exploring when you have free time.
