INDIANAPOLIS — If you haven't gotten your Thanksgiving shopping done yet, get ready to pay up for what you can find on store shelves.

It's almost Thanksgiving and shoppers are out looking for last-minute items for their big meal without breaking their wallets. The average cost of Thanksgiving has jumped from $53 to $64 this year.

Shopper Jeanean Silverman was one of the Hoosiers doing their last-minute shopping a day before Thanksgiving. She noticed one thing as she picked out her groceries.

"Everything across the board has been at least 30 to 50 cents more," said Silverman.

She's one of many who are feeling the pinch on their wallet because of inflation. Because of price increases, she's had to supplement some of her groceries by getting some items at local food pantries. She feels disheartened, sometimes, looking at the price tags.

"Your dollars not stretching as much for what you get," said Silverman.

That's not the only thing she was stretching. She's stretched her recipes.

"When a recipe uses a whole pound of hamburger, you use a half a pound and make some of the side items go into that more," said Silverman.

Shopper Anthony Heard said he was pleasantly surprised about the turkey prices at Meijer, but is worried about the price of other items you can't get at the store.

"The gas trying to travel to go eat is a different story. The food is better than the gas," he said.

As shoppers continue to grab those last-minute items, Silverman said those looking for a deal may pay in other ways - with their time

"Be prepared to go to multiple places" she said.
