Sign outside Connecticut McDonald's throws shade on new neighbors

GLASTONBURY, Conn. (WTHR) - A billboard outside a Connecticut McDonald's is throwing shade on a new neighbor - even when the sun's not out.

A photo taken by NBC Connecticut of the McDonald's in Glastonbury shows the restaurant's sign bearing the message "We Welcome Everyone" in front of a Chick-fil-A restaurant that's set to open next door July 26.

The McDonald's manager told NBC Connecticut the sign was simple a welcome message.

"It just means that everyone is welcome, young, old, everyone," said Susan Lafleur.

But not everyone believes it. Several people wondered if the sign was a jab at the beliefs of Chick-fil-A's owners. The chain has taken criticism in the past for its owner's opposition to same-sex marriage and support for initiatives against such unions.

The owner of the Glastonbury franchise told NBC Connecticut he wasn't sure what the sign's intent was, but said he was excited to open his restaurant and "look forward to being great neighbors who welcome everyone."

"Glastonbury will be representative of all Chick-fil-A restaurants in serving great food and providing remarkable service for all customers, as well as a diverse workplace of individuals who represent many viewpoints, opinions, backgrounds and beliefs," Jordan Snook told the television station.
