Duncan Hines recalls cake mixes over salmonella concerns

Several varieties of a popular cake mix have been recalled due to salmonella concerns.

CHICAGO (WTHR) - Several varieties of a popular cake mix have been recalled due to salmonella concerns.

Duncan Hines has recalled packages of its Classic White, Classic Yellow, Classic Butter Golden and Signature Confetti mixes after a positive finding of salmonella in a retail sample of the white cake mix. The finding is reportedly linked to a salmonella outbreak that is currently under investigation by the CDC and FDA.

As a precaution, Conagra Brands is voluntarily recalling the cake mixes made during the same time period as the contaminated product.

Several people reported becoming ill around the time that they had consumed the cake mix, though some may have eaten raw batter, which is strongly recommended against.

The affected cake mixes are sold in 15.25-ounce packages and have the following product UPC codes and "Best If Used By" dates ranging from March 7-13:

  • Duncan Hines Classic White Cake (UPC: 644209307500)
  • Duncan Hines Classic Yellow Cake (UPC: 644209307494)
  • Duncan Hines Classic Butter Golden Cake (UPC: 644209307593)
  • Duncan Hines Signature Confetti Cake (UPC: 644209414550)

Conagra has removed the product in question from store shelves, but encourages anyone who has already purchased the items not to consume them and return them to the store where the mix was purchased.

Consumers with questions can call 1-888-299-7646, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday or visit www.duncanhines.com.
