Mom, Baby Run Off The Road

FORTVILLE, Ind. (WTHR) - A domestic dispute spilled onto a busy Hancock County highway and put a baby and mother at risk.

It happened along busy State Road 67 in Fortville, where muddy tracks in the high grass still show where a car was forced off the road.

Some debris remains, as well. We found a smashed light cover. The ditch is gouged where the car crossed a ravine and smacked into the opposite bank.

It was about 5:30 in the afternoon. A woman coming from the east told us she saw a car do a sudden U-turn in the middle of the highway.

"I just thought they were going the wrong way," said Jessica King

Then she noticed a car following it also did a quick U-turn.

"The SUV that was behind went really fast and I thought, 'That's not right'," King said.

She spotted the man in that following car come up fast and force the woman in the other vehicle off the road.

"He hit her so hard it literally put her in the ditch," King recalled.

She pulled over to help the victim.

"When she got out and I heard her scream 'My baby!' and I heard the baby in the backseat, I instantly ran down there to make sure the baby was OK," she said.

She was worried as she ran down the muddy hill. She knew it was a hard impact.

"I asked the passenger, 'Can I grab the baby please?' because he had mud all over his face and stuff," King said.

Police weren't there yet.

King didn't know the baby's mother and the man who chased them down were arguing. She didn't know the man, 38-year-old Shun Diggs, would soon be arrested for violating a stay-away order and more.

"I got in the car and grabbed the baby, made sure he was OK, put him in my truck, wiped his face off," King said. "Calmed him down, he was screaming. Got him calmed down and then mom came up and got him out of the car seat. So just wanted to make sure the baby was OK. First mother instinct."

Diggs was arrested for criminal recklessness, reckless driving and more. Those are in addition to charges from a few days before when he allegedly broke into the woman's house.

King doesn't know about all that. She's just glad everyone survived and that she could help a child at risk.
