Military member home for holidays shot, killed on New Year's Eve

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WTHR) — A Michigan family is grieving after the loss of a loved one this holiday season.

Tyrone Hassel III was a 23-year-old active-duty military member. He had been stationed in South Korea, but came home for the holidays to visit his family. Shortly before welcoming in the new year, Hassel was shot, and later died at a hospital.

A neighbor told NBC affiliate WNDU Hassel was spending the night hanging out with his cousins. Witnesses said they heard five or six gunshots and the sound of a car's tires screeching. Police found Hassel with multiple gunshot wounds.

Medics treated Hassel at the scene then took him to the hospital, but he unfortunately did not make it.

Police have not yet released any suspect information. But for now, the family is grieving a terrible loss.
