TROY, Mich. (WDIV) - A police department in the Detroit area is getting a new officer - and this one has four legs!

The Troy Police Department auditioned five cats for the job, but no winner yet. The cat will be used for therapeutic purposes and to make public appearances.

Authorities say the department wants to promote pet adoptions from area shelters.

They reached out on Twitter saying they would add a cat if they could get 10,000 followers by April. They went from 4,000 to 10,000 in just eight days.

"Police everywhere being able to connect with our community and show our human side, this cat campaign has had a lot of success in that area," explained Sgt. Meghan Lehman.

Police say they'll take to Twitter again so followers can vote on a name for the cat.
