Messy Thursday Morning Commute

The filtered sun today is the quiet before a wintry mess tonight into Thursday. Afternoon highs remain unseasonably cold in the mid-30s... some 20° below average. No road issues to worry about this evening.

Latest guidance suggests a mix of snow/sleet arriving from south-to-north between midnight and 3 AM. As this happens, road conditions deteriorate going into the Thursday morning commute... with the snow/sleet mix transitioning to a period of freezing rain.

Please use caution if driving or even walking early Thursday as untreated surfaces likely become icy for several hours before 9 AM.

From 9 AM to noon... we're expecting freezing rain to transition to a rain/snow mix but surface temperatures creeping above freezing. This allows any icy roads to become mainly wet for the afternoon/evening commute. Precipitation rates later in the day should be mainly light but areas of dense fog may slow down driving.

Total snow accumulations for much of the region are expected to be in the one to two inch range with ice amounts of .03" to locally .10". Please note that less mixing would result in more two to four inch snow totals. We'll adjust as needed. At this time the area we think sees less sleet/ice is western Indiana and the area of most ice/rain is southeast Indiana.

Some refreezing seems likely Thursday night as lows drop into the 20s... possibly impacting the Friday morning commute. The weekend still looks mainly cloudy and there's a growing possibility of rain/snow mix on Sunday.

Chilly conditions linger into early next week but a "warming" trend into the 50s heading into Thanksgiving. This "warm" up likely comes with increasing odds of showers for Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
