INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — There's no shortage of hit musicals in Broadway in Indianapolis' 2020-2021 season.

  • "Mean Girls": Dec. 1-6, 2020, Old National Centre
  • "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory": Jan. 26-31, 2021, Clowes Hall
  • "Jesus Christ Superstar": March 9-14, 2021, Clowes Hall
  • "Pretty Woman": April 6-11, 2021, Old National Centre
  • "Dear Evan Hansen": June 1-6, 2021, Old National Centre

"Mean Girls" kicks off the new season in December. The musical adaptation of the 2004 film debuted on Broadway in March 2018 and received 12 Tony nominations. The story follows Cady Herron, who returns to the United States after a research trip in Africa with her parents. She must adjust to the public school life and quickly figure out which social clique she belongs with. It was recently announced the musical will be adapted into a film.

A musical adaptation of the popular 1964 Roald Dahl children's novel made its way to Broadway in April 2017 before closing in January 2018. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" follows Charlie Bucket, a poor, down-on-his-luck kid in need of a little adventure. Chocolatier Willy Wonka announces he will re-open his factory and invite five lucky children on a tour if they can find a Golden Ticket inside a Wonka Bar. The big problem? Charlie doesn't have any money to buy a single candy bar.

In 2018, NBC aired a live concert version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" featuring John Legend, Sara Bareilles and Brandon Victor Dixon. The special earned 13 Emmy nominations and shortly after, a nationwide tour was announced to celebrate the Tony-nominated show's 50th anniversary. The rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice is loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus' life.

The popular 1990 film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere was adapted into a Broadway musical and ran from August 2018 to August 2019. The romantic comedy shows an unlikely romance blossom between a Hollywood sex worker and a wealthy businessman who hires her to be his date to several business events.

Arguably the highlight of the 2020-2021 season, "Dear Evan Hansen" is still one of the hottest shows on Broadway — nearly selling out every performance each week since its opening in December 2016. The six-time Tony winning musical follows a high school senior with social anxiety who creates a fabricated story of his relationship with a student who recently committed suicide in order to become closer with the boy's sister.
