INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A group of friends and volunteers are stepping up to help a family tackle medical debt after their infant daughter had a heart transplant.

Sydney Deaver was three months old when doctors told her parents she would need a new heart. The child spent more than five months in the hospital, including five weeks after having successful surgery.

Insurance covers some of the expense but not all.

“I think the ballpark for having a transplant is over $500,000,” said Sydney’s mother, Ashley.

To help, friends have been collecting donated items for months and are now hosting a giant yard sale to help cover transplant-related expenses.

“I thought 'what can I do to help?' I thought this would be a perfect opportunity for a big sale and raise money for Sydney,” said Lacey Walden.

The yard sale is set for Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at 925 West Troy Avenue in Indianapolis.
