Massive 'Fortnite' security breach allowed hackers to take over accounts

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The makers of Fortnite have fixed a massive security breach.

Scammers used phishing emails that looked like they came from Epic Games, NBCNews reported.

Any player that would click on the email would allow hackers to get into their accounts.

That would allow the hacker to access personal information or use saved payments to buy online content.

"These platforms are being increasingly targeted by hackers because of the huge amounts of sensitive customer data they hold. Enforcing two-factor authentication could mitigate this account takeover vulnerability," Oded Vanunu, head of products vulnerability research for Check Point told NBCNews.

The problem started in November and was just repaired this month.

Game researchers also noted that Fortnite has also become a hub for criminals looking to launder money from stolen credit cards by selling accounts for the game.
