Marion woman celebrates 95th birthday at 13,000 feet

95 year old skydives on birthday

FRANKFORT, Ind. (WTHR) - A Marion, Indiana woman celebrated her 95th birthday Saturday at 13,000 feet with three of her grandchildren and her niece.

Bettie Butler said she has wanted to skydive for years.

"When I saw President George Bush do it, I thought I could do that, too," Bettie said.

Her son, John, laughed.

"I told her she needed to get on with it," he said. "She's not getting any younger."

Bettie is known for her fearless, can-do nature.

She went up in a hot air balloon for her 80th birthday. She jet skied this summer. What's more, she volunteers at Marion General Hospital every Friday, and has done so for the past 20 years.

Her granddaughter, Meredith Brandenburger, first mentioned skydiving to her grandmother as a fun idea. Brandenburger said, "You know that would be fun? And she agreed!"

In addition to her fellow skydivers, 40 friends and family came to watch, support and cheer Bettie on on her birthday.

After her skydive and safe landing, everyone gathered in the hangar, sang Happy Birthday, and Bettie blew out her 95 candles.

"I made it!" Bettie beamed. "It was wonderful. My favorite part was under canopy because I could see everything and everyone."

John reflected on his mom's experience.

"It was amazing," he said. "Mom had a fantastic time. All of the her family, her friends, she loves it."
