1-year-old death investigation

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Word of the violent death of baby Dontrell McClung has been devastating to his grandfather.

“There’s just a pain inside I’ve never had before," said Richard Fear, Marion. "I don’t want nobody to ever have to experience this. It hurts bad. I was really close to that boy, we was really close. I miss him so much."

He dissolves in tears.

Police say 16-month-old Dontrell died of blunt force trauma, a homicide. It allegedly happened inside a Broad Ripple home rental listed on Airbnb.

His mother, 19-year-old Kira Fear and her 21-year-old boyfriend Tyree Resnover are charged with neglect of a dependent causing death.

The homeowner said neighbors told him of "lot of visitors" to the house the night before the baby’s death.

Investigators found a spot in the basement the may have traces of the baby’s blood. Some of the baby’s toys and diapers were left behind at the rental house, they said.

It’s unclear when Dontrell died, but some people waved down a passing ambulance Wednesday morning to get help for the child.

“I'm confused by this," Fear told Eyewitness News Thursday in Marion. "I really don’t know what’s going on. I hope what they’re saying is not true. That’s my daughter, my firstborn,” referring to Kira. “She seemed like she was a good mom, really protective. She loved her son. I mean, I don’t see her doing anything that way."

She’s now in the Marion County jail. Fear hasn’t been able to see her yet, but he sees that baby all the time.

“He was always smiling, long hair, curls. He’s precious, man.“

They had their little songs and dances, he said.

“He was the light of my life, man. He saves my life, in a sense. I love that boy with all my heart. I just can’t believe he’s gone."
