Man's Honda Accord reaches 1 million miles

DURHAM, N.C. (WTHR) — It's one thing to go the extra mile, but one North Carolina man's car has gone so many more.

Dexter Mills said his car is getting lots of attention these days as he finally logged 1 million miles on the Honda Accord since buying it brand new in 2000.

"It's been absolutely phenomenal," Mills told WRAL. "I still average anywhere from 440 to 460 miles out of a tank of gas."

Mills is a vehicle inspector who travels statewide to shops and dealerships. He said he drives about 65,000 miles each year.

"I've put a little over 800,000 miles on it myself."

He stressed the importance of consistent oil and filter changes. He said he saved money by driving in a "non-aggressive manner" and doing most of the maintenance himself.

He's replaced the engine twice — once at 375,000 miles and again at 695,000 miles — and the alternator, starter and compressor once each.

In a Facebook post, Mills said a diagnostic check didn't show any abnormalities on his vehicle. But he's got his eyes on a new ride — maybe an SUV.

"I'm a little sad, but I think it's time to let it rest, let it retire. It's been an excellent car."
