SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (WTHR) — A California college student says he used the "gender-switch" filter on Snapchat to catch a pedophile. Even worse, he says the man who reached out is an officer.

The student, who only wants to be known as Ethan, said he had a friend who was molested as a child.

He told police he created the fake profile to identify possible pedophiles.

Ethan told police he had a man reach out to the online profile where he was posing as a girl.

He said he told the man he was 16-years-old, but the man kept sending explicit messages and wanted to meet.

Ethan then took pictures of the messages and sent them to police. They identified the man sending the messages as Robert Davies, a San Mateo police officer.

Davies has been placed on administrative leave and is facing a charge of contacting a minor to commit a felony.
