Man shot near State Fairgrounds dies at hospital

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Metro police are investigating a man shot in the neighborhood just south of the State Fairgrounds.

Metro Police say the man, later identified as 20-year-old Chad Smitherman, died after he was taken to the hospital.

Police say just after 6:30 a.m. Friday, the were called to the Get Go gas station at the intersection of East 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway, where Smitherman was found shot multiple times. The shooting happened nearby in the 3600 block of Hemlock Avenue.

Smitherman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and passed away there, according to an update from IMPD Sgt. Grace Sibley on Saturday.

Police have not shared information on what led to the shooting or any suspect information.
