Man facing murder charge after I-70 stabbing victim dies

WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - A Florida man who was stabbed on Interstate 70 in Wayne County last week has died.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Department said Friday 55-year-old Angel Cruz of Miami died from stab wounds he suffered last Friday.

Deputies were called just after 6 p.m. on August 16 to I-70 north of Richmond for a semi stopped in the right lane with its flashers on.

A deputy found Cruz inside the semi was suffering from apparent stab wounds. He was taken to Reid Health in Richmond then transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio for surgery.

Pavel Nery Gonzalez, 47, also of Miami, was taken into custody at the scene was charged with aggravated battery and attempted murder. After Cruz passed away, the attempted murder charge was amended to murder.

Both lanes of eastbound I-70 were closed while investigators gathered evidence and moved the truck off the road. The road reopened just before midnight.

At last report, police have not determined what led to the stabbing.
