INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Part of a major east-west artery through Indianapolis is closing for nine days for road repairs and maintenance.

All lanes of Interstate 70 between the South Split and I-465 will be closed from July 26 through 6 a.m. on Aug. 5.

The nearly 8-mile stretch of I-70 sees roughly 100,000 vehicles during peak times. It's also a main route to and from the airport.

Deedra McClung and Helene Patterson were flying out of Indianapolis International Friday afternoon for a long weekend in New York City.

While getting to the airport was easy, they knew getting home Sunday would probably be a hassle.

McClung said, "it's going to take a long time," with Patterson chiming in, "It's definitely going to suck. Who wants the highway closed? And we have to go all the way around and take the streets? I mean no."

But given they were headed out-of-town to celebrate Patterson's birthday, it wasn't anything they'd worry about until Sunday.

Mallory Duncan, a spokesperson for INDOT said the work on I-70 was scheduled to take place over several weekends this past spring, but the rain kept that from happening.

"So, this closure will allow us to do a ton of work in a short amount of time," she said.

Besides doing resurfacing and bridge work, Duncan said INDOT was bringing in all their maintenance crews to do "small things like guardrail or sign repairs or light bulb changes in interstate lights...things we'd have to close a shoulder or part of a lane to get that done."

The work will be underway during Gen Con, one of the city's biggest conventions. Last year it drew 60,000 people, from across the country.

Duncan said they're working with Gen Con organizers to make attendees know of the closure and alternate routes. Indianapolis International Airport is also posting alerts on its website. Duncan said Google Maps, Waze and other mapping apps are good options for getting around the construction.

Two other stretches of interstate will also be closed through Monday morning. All lanes of I-65 southbound from the North Split to the South Split will be closed for construction. And on the northwest side, all lanes of I-65 southbound from I-865 to I-465 will remain closed, also until 6 a.m. Monday.
