MADISON COUNTY (WTHR) - A man deer hunting in Madison County near Middletown was accidentally shot Saturday evening as he was getting down from his tree stand.

Indiana Conservation Officers say Karl Stratton, 50, was found lying on the ground by Madison County deputies with a gunshot wound to his upper thigh. A relative of Stratton called 911 to alert authorities about the shooting just before 6 p.m. Saturday.

He was treated at the scene by EMS personnel and transported to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis.

An investigation found that Stratton's 12-gauge shotgun discharged as he was grabbing a soft case that was hanging on a branch next to his tree stand ladder. The safety of the gun was off and the gun was pointed towards him when the gun discharged.

This is a reminder to hunters about the importance of handling firearms safely in the field.
