INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Family and friends of an Indianapolis teen who died two years ago are honoring her memory on what would have been her 22nd birthday.

We spotted Maddie Ross's mother Paula Strauss and other family members dressed up like a minion downtown spreading a message of happiness and hope. The costume was a tribute to her daughter's favorite movie, "Despicable Me."

"I think it's a healing process for grieving parents to make sure that their child is remembered, and it helps that because doing good things for people is healing."

Maddie was 19 when she died in June of 2014 due to complications from a surgery.

Maddie's family created a nonprofit called "Maddie Smiles" to help their daughter's legacy live on.

The organization is holding a toy drive for the second year in a row for Riley Hospital for Children. The drive ends on August 31st.
