INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – Andrew Luck arrived in Indianapolis as the number one draft pick in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Stanford University. He was 22 years old.

"Truly a dream come true,” Luck said on draft night, April 26, 2012. Luck led the Colts to 11 wins and the playoffs in each of his first three seasons.

That included coming back from 28 points down against the Kansas City Chiefs for his first playoff win in his first home playoff game in his second season.

In his third season, he set the Colts record for most passing yards in a season (4,761) and won two playoffs games before a blowout loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship, the "DeflateGate" game.

Luck’s injury problems began in 2015. He missed two games in October with a shoulder injury. His season ended November 8th with a lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscle suffered against the Broncos.

Luck signed a six-year contract extension worth $140 million before the 2016 season, making him the highest paid player in the NFL.

He missed one game that season with a concussion but required shoulder surgery after the season. He was expected to return for the 2017 season but never did.

Luck was finally ready to throw again in 2018.

Despite a 1-5 start, the Colts made the playoffs and won a playoff game. Luck won NFL comeback player of the year.

He missed all of this year's off-season team workouts with a calf injury. He started training camp with limited drills but practiced just three days before shutting down his training.

The Colts revealed Luck was dealing with a high ankle injury.

News of Luck’s decision to retire leaked during the second half of the Colts preseason game against the Bears Saturday night.

After seven years with the Colts, at age 29, Luck confirmed his retirement in an impromptu news conference after the game.

"I'm in pain,” said Luck. “I'm still in pain. I've been in this cycle. It's been four years of this injury-pain-rehab cycle. For me to move forward in my life the way I want to, it doesn't involve football."
