(WTHR) — A local Army veteran got a big gift today to further his mission of helping other service members.

Michael Deman now has a shiny, refurbished truck.

It's part of a nationwide program called "Keys to Progress," which helps deserving veterans get new rides.

The 27-year Army vet works with Wish For Our Heroes, an organization that provides support for service men and women and their families.

In his role, Denman drives a lot. His previous truck had 365,000 miles on it.

After some convincing, he realized being an applicant for the 'Keys' program would be a good way to keep his mission going.

Denman said while he officially retired a few years ago, he's not done serving yet.

"Actually, I'm not out of the military," Denman said. "The way I look at it now is I've got a different uniform on; I continue to serve in a charitable manner instead of serving like I used to on active duty."

Denman said Wish For Our Heroes is always looking for volunteers.
