LIDS, Colts cheerleaders and Blue bring Hat Day celebration to Riley

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTHR) - To be precise, "National Hat Day" is actually this Sunday, but the patients at Riley Hospital for Children are celebrating early.

On Thursday, LIDS and the Indianapolis Colts surprised nearly 100 Riley patients with brand new hats.

The hats were passed out by Colts cheerleaders along with Blue and employees of LIDS.

"The funny thing about a hat is they tend to really lift a person's spirits," said John Dewaal, LIDS marketing vice president. "It's a very personal thing and it's a way to express their personality and a lot of people take a real personal pleasure in them. And so we hope by giving them these hats it just takes their attention away from what they might be going through here at the hospital and brings them a little joy."

LIDS will also be donating $1.00 for every hat sold on National Hat Day to its LIDS Foundation. It's provided millions of dollars in support of youth development charities across the country.
