Kentucky police officer shot and killed


PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WTHR) -- Kentucky State Police say they are investigating the fatal shooting of a Pikeville Police officer.

According to WSAZ, Scotty Hamilton, a 12-year veteran patrolman of the Pikeville Police Department, died in the line of duty in a shooting late Tuesday night.

Officer Hamilton and a Kentucky State Police trooper were investigating a crime in the Hurricane Creek area when Hamilton was shot and killed.

Authorities say they have one person in custody.

Officer Hamilton leaves behind a wife and an infant child.

According the to the Pikeville Police website, Hamilton is the second department officer to die in the line of duty. The first died in 1929.
