Johnson County residents speak out about dangerous intersections

Residents along SR 135 in Johnson County are calling for improved safety in the area.

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WTHR) - Residents of Johnson County are calling for safety improvements after a series of crashes along a stretch of a busy roadway.

The concern is over the section of State Road 135 between Smith Valley Road and Stones Crossing Road. Just last month, Center Grove High School junior Sarah Kish died when a Johnson County Animal Control SUV collided with her car at one of those intersections.

Kish's neighbor said it's not just a danger for drivers.

"We've had two pedestrians struck and there's really nowhere for pedestrians to cross. There's no safe way to turn left onto 135. The traffic is fast, the traffic is thick," said James Pope. "In the five years that I've lived here, there's been a dozen wrecks or more."

Pope says he and his neighbors have already contacted the sheriff's department and INDOT. They plan on reaching out to other local and state leaders to try to put a short-term fix in place and then work toward a long-term solution.
