John Andretti undergoes cancer surgery in Charlotte Wednesday

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The Andretti Autosport drivers held their annual autograph session and charity garage sale this afternoon.

Jarrett Andretti has a sports car ride with the team this year, hoping his father will be back at the races. Some 20 Andretti family members are part of chain text getting updates on John.

John was in surgery in Charlotte, where doctors were removing cancerous tumors that had attacked his body once again.

"His spirits are really high. I spoke with him this morning, actually, and multiple times yesterday. He's feeling good," said Jarrett.

"His attitude and his positivity, it's just unbelievable, and it's contagious, when you're around him, it's so uplifting, even with what he's going through," said Marco Andretti.

John's uncle agreed with those sentiments.

"If anyone can pull through something like this, it's going to be him," said Mario Andretti

John believes what started as colon cancer could have been prevented if he got a colonoscopy sooner. He started the Check It 4 Andretti campaign to raise awareness for the potentially life-saving screening.

John's Race for Riley had raised over $4 million in about 20 years for Riley Hospital for Children.
