Jasper man pulled to safety after boat explodes and burns

DUBOIS COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a boat fire that started on Patoka Lake Sunday afternoon.

According to Officer Joe Haywood of DNR, Paul Eckert of Jasper was operating a sixty foot house boat when he heard an explosion from the engine compartment around 4:00 p.m. The boat caught on fire and a boater nearby was able to pull Eckert clear of the burning boat.

The boat is a total loss estimated at $90,000. It sunk in the lake and will have to be removed.

The incident occurred near the Patoka Lake Dam east of Jasper.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the explosion and fire.
