HILLSBOROUGH, North Carolina (WTHR) - A home invasion suspect is on the loose after authorities say an 11-year-old north Carolina boy fought him off with a machete.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office says Jataveon Dashawn Hall broke into the home through a window.

They say he used a pellet gun to force the 11 year-old into a closet.

But the boy was able to get out of the closet, grab a machete, and strike Hall in the back of the head.

Police caught up with Hall when he checked into a nearby hospital for the head wound.

But on Friday night, a nurse found Hall’s his bed empty. He had been in the legal custody of the sheriff's office but was not placed with an officer while in the hospital.

Now the sheriff's office, State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals are now searching for Hall.
